Christmas Cards: What to Write for Your Message

Every year around Thanksgiving, many people start planning out the next holiday. Christmas comes all too fast after the Thanksgiving feast is over, with only a month left to prepare. One thing people seem to start doing right away is sending out their Christmas cards. They want to be sure their cards arrive in plenty of time for the holidays. Traditional cards fill people’s homes, with many receiving the same card from multiple people. Rather than sending generic messages, new and creative ideas should be incorporated into what you write. After reading the tips below, anyone looking to create their own card can find some inspiration.

Base it on Christmas Movies

There are numerous Christmas movies out there that people enjoy. If you know the person well that you’re sending the card to, think of their favorite Christmas movie of all time. If they are just an acquaintance, then think of a popular Christmas movie that many people like. Most people are at least familiar with these films.

Once you have the movie in mind, such as “A Christmas Story,” you can find a picture

of the movie poster online. This will be used for the front of the card. You could also use a picture of a scene from the movie. On the inside of the card, you can include a quote from the movie that most people should recognize. For example, in “A Christmas Story,” it is often said that the little boy will shoot his eye out if he gets the BB gun that he wants. In your card you can say, “Here’s hoping you don’t shoot your eye out this Christmas.” It will be a funny remark that people who like the movie will enjoy reading.

Here are some other movies and examples of what to write about them:

  • Home Alone: “I hope you don’t end up being Home Alone this Christmas. Here’s to wishing you a happy holiday with the ones you love!”

  • The Santa Clause: “Like Charlie says, ‘Seeing isn’t believing, believing is seeing.’ I hope you believe in the spirit of Christmas this year! Have a Happy Holiday.”

  • The Santa Clause: “If you see Santa Clause this Christmas, be sure not to knock him off the roof! Unless you’d like to take his place, of course. Have a jolly Holiday!” This would be a funnier route to take for the movie.

Base it on Christmas Songs

There are also countless Christmas Songs that are popular around the holidays. This can be the basis for what to write inside the Christmas card. Choose a song that the person you are sending the card to enjoys. If “White Christmas” is one of their favorites, then get inspired from lyrics from that song. Write, “I know you’ve been dreaming of a White Christmas this year. Hope you get one.” One simple line will remind them of the song and put it in their heads.

For the picture on the front of the card, anything that has to do with the song can be used. For “White Christmas,” you can simply use a Christmas tree covered in snow, or even snow on the ground. A snowflake would be a good choice as well. Over the picture, you can write a few lines of lyrics from the song. Anyone who loves that song will appreciate the card.

Here are some other songs and examples of what to write about them:

A scene from Alvin and the Chipmunks

~The Chipmunk Song: “Whether you want a plane that loops the loop like the Chipmunks do, or a hula-hoop like Alvin, I hope you get all the toys and cheer you could want this year. I know you can’t stand the wait either, but don’t worry, Christmas won’t be late. Merry Christmas!” Put a picture of Alvin and The Chipmunks on the front of the card, or a plane and hula-hoop.

~Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer: “Watch the roads this holiday season. You wouldn’t want to get run over by a reindeer like Grandma did! Merry Christmas!” This is a funny song, and warrants a funny message. Put a picture of someone’s feet under some reindeer for the cover photo.

Base it on Christmas Jokes

A lot of people choose humorous cards to give. They think it’s funny, and most likely the other person will too. There are numerous Christmas jokes that can be used for the inspiration of your Christmas card. Choose a random Christmas-related picture for the cover. Over it, write the first half of the joke. The remainder of the joke should be placed on the inside of the card. For example, on the cover of the card, put a picture of a snowman. Over it, write “What do Snowmen Eat for Breakfast?” When they open the card it will say, “Snowflakes!” It is just a cute, simple joke that will make the recipient of the card smile. You can finish off the card by saying that you hope they see many snowflakes this Christmas, and to have a happy New Year.

Here are some other jokes and how to write them:

Elf ornament
  • On the cover, put a photo of an elf. As the caption, write, “Why was the little elf depressed?” When the card is opened it will say, “Because he had low elf esteem!”

Finish by saying that if they’re feeling depressed like the little elf this year, then cheer up, it’s Christmas! This could be good for someone who you know has been feeling sad lately or has otherwise been in a non-Christmas mood.

  • For the cover photo, include a picture of a door. Write on it, “Knock Knock!” On the inside it will contain a dialogue. The card should say - “Who’s there?” - “Mary.” - “Mary who?” - “Merry Christmas!” Then simply finish it off by saying, “I hope you have a Merry Christmas this year!” Just a simple message is all you need.

Perhaps you have multiple people to send Christmas cards to. You can choose to send the same card to everyone, or create a unique card that you know each person will love. Either way, there are plenty of options to choose from to give everyone a great card that they will enjoy. These may just be the best Christmas cards they’ve ever received!
